Universal Pre-enrichment Broth is used for the recovery of Salmonella spp. and Listeria spp. in a laboratory setting. Universal Pre-enrichment Broth is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Traditional methods for recovering Salmonella spp. and Listeria spp. from food products require separate pre-enrichment media for each microorganism. Some broth media recommended for preenrichment contain antibiotic inhibitors or have insufficient buffering capacity which hinder recovery of sublethally injured cells. Bailey and Cox formulated Universal Preenrichment Broth to permit simultaneous resuscitation of sublethally injured Salmonella and Listeria. The broth medium provides sufficient buffering capacity to prevent rapid decreases in pH and allows for repair of injured cells that might be sensitive to low pH values or inhibitory substances. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/universal-preenrichment-broth

Buffered Peptone Water (BPW) (ISO) is used for the non-selective pre-enrichment of a variety of microorganisms from food including Salmonella spp. and Cronobacter spp. from food. Buffered Peptone Water (BPW) (ISO) is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Formulated to ISO 6579-1:2017, ISO 22694:2017, ISO 21528-1:2017 and ISO 12950:2010. This pre-enrichment medium is designed to help sublethally damaged salmonellae recover before introducing them into a selective medium. This nutrient medium is free from inhibitors and is well buffered to maintain pH 7.0 for the incubation period. Sublethal injury to salmonellae occurs in many food processes and this pre-enrichment step greatly increases recovery of these organisms. Violet Red Bile Agar is used for the enumeration of coliforms in food and dairy products in a laboratory setting. Violet Red Bile Agar is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans and conforms to American Public Health Association (APHA). The coliform group of bacteria includes aerobic and facultative anaerobic, gram-negative, non-spore forming bacilli. Coliforms ferment lactose and form acid and gas at 35°C within 48 hours. Members of Enterobacteriaceae comprise the majority of the group, but other lactose fermenting organisms may also be included. Procedures to detect, enumerate, and presumptively identify coliforms are used in testing foods and dairy products. One method for performing the presumptive test for coliforms uses Violet Red Bile Agar, (VRBA).For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/violet-red-bile-agar

Malt Extract is a dehydrated extract of malt for use in preparing microbiological culture media in a laboratory setting. Malt Extract is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.Malt Extract is a clarified, water-soluble extract of malted barley. Malt Extract is a useful ingredient of culture media designed for the propagation of yeasts and molds. This ingredient is suitable for yeasts and molds because it contains a high concentration of carbohydrates, particularly maltose. The approximate percentage of reducing sugars in Malt Extract is 60 – 63%.The high carbohydrate content makes malt extract very sensitive to overheating which results in darkening of the medium it is used in. Malt Extract is generally employed in culture media at concentrations between 10 to 100 grams per liter. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/malt-extract

Chromogenic Coliform Agar (CCA) is for the enumeration of Escherichia coli and Coliforms in water and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Chromogenic Coliform Agar (CCA) is recommended by ISO 9308-1 for the simultaneous detection and enumeration of β-glucuronidase-positive Escherichia coli and β-D-galactosidase positive coliform bacteria from water samples using membrane filtration. Peptone and yeast extract provide a source of nitrogen and essential vitamins. Sodium chloride maintains the osmotic balance and the phosphates buffer the media. Sodium Pyruvate, Sorbitol and Tryptophan aid in the recovery and detection of the target organisms. Tergitol™ 7 is a surfactant that acts as a selective agent. The dual chromogens are incorporated to differentiate between E. coli and coliforms based on their enzymatic activity. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/harlequin-chromogenic-coliform-agar

Campylobacter Blood-Free Selective Medium (Modified Charcoal Cefoperazone Deoycholate Agar or mCCDA) is used for the cultivation of campylobacters, and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.A blood free medium which will support the growth of most enteric campylobacters. The selective supplement X112 (X212) makes the medium selective for C. jejuni. and C. coli when incubated at 37°C. With this product incubation at 42°C is no longer necessary and higher recovery rates have been reported at 37°C than at 42°C. The supplement X112 (X212) consists of cefoperazone and amphotericin and is superior to the selective combination of Skirrow, Butzler and Blazer-Wang all of which contain antibiotics shown to be inhibitors to C. coli. The colonial morphologies of Campylobacter spp. on this medium are distinctive. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/campy-blood-free-selective-medium-modified-ccda-emea

Violet Red Bile Glucose Agar is used for the enumeration of Enterobacteriaceae in foods and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.Formulated according to ISO 21528:2017 (all parts), VRBGA is a modification of Violet Red Bile Lactose Agar (NCM0089) introduced by Mossel in 1978. VRBA contains lactose which is fermented by members of the coli/ aerogenes group, this medium gives a ‘coliform’ count. The VRBGA formula modification replaces lactose with glucose. Glucose is fermented by all members of the Enterobacteriaceae thus gives a presumptive Enterobacteriaceae count. Bile salts and crystal violet are used to inhibit Gram positive and non-enteric organisms. The overlay procedure ensures anaerobic conditions and suppresses the growth of non-fermentative Gram negative bacteria. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/violet-red-bile-glucose-agar-iso

Water Plate Count Agar is a non-selective medium which conforms to ISO 6222:1999, and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.Water Plate Count Agar allows the enumeration of culturable microorganisms, which can be used for the assessment and surveillance of water quality. Colony counts are useful for assessment of ground water integrity and the efficiency of water treatment processes. They also give an indication of the cleanliness and integrity of the distribution system. They can be used to assess the suitability of a water supply for the preparation of food and drink, thus avoiding contamination of the product with spoilage organisms. The main value of colony counts lies in the detection of changes in water supply quality from those expected, based on frequent long-term monitoring. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/water-plate-count-agar

Bile Esculin Agar is used for the selective isolation and differentiation of group D streptococci from foods and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.Bile Esculin Agar is based on the formulation described by Swan and further evaluated by Facklam and Moody. Rochaix first noted the value of esculin hydrolysis in the identification of enterococcci. Meyer and Schonfeld added bile to the esculin medium and demonstrated 61 of 62 enterococci strains were able to grow and hydrolyze esculin, while other streptococci could not.Molecular taxonomic studies of the genus Streptococcus have placed enterococci, previously described as group D streptococci, in the genus Enterococcus. The ability to hydrolyze esculin in the presence of bile is a characteristic of enterococci and group D streptococci. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/bile-esculin-agar
